DIY Coastal Wine Cork Magnets

It's been a while since I last posted! With all the hurdles life throws sometimes I just need down time and then some more to get back into the swing of things; this includes healing my poor ankle that's been swollen for a whole week now (ugh). Curse flip flops and flat feet...my advice ladies, never wear them unless you have to.

While I've been a little bit of a handicap this past week I decided I wanted to make some magnets so I could hang a drawing my boyfriend's niece did for me. Since I wasn't looking to go and buy a bag of wine corks from the craft store, I emailed a couple of the local wineries to see if they might let me come pick up a bag of corks they weren't going to use. Sure enough, Lost Oak Winery welcomed me to a lovely bag full of corks for my project ~ it smelled sooo good ~

All you'll need for this project is:
Magnet pieces
Wine corks cut in half
Pot and strainer
Jute string
A couple of your favorite seashells

First you'll want to steam the wine corks in a strainer on a pot on the stove for 30 minutes or longer depending on the type of corks you use. If I could've done anything different for mine it would've been to soak them overnight. Steaming for 30 minutes was only enough to make an easy cut half way through for my corks. After you have them all soaked up and cut, let them dry for an hour or so before putting a coat of clear finger nail polish or mod podge on the backs of the corks to seal the backing.

After all the pieces are dry, the hard part is over! Now to be creative and choose how to decorate your corks. I used different styles of jute wrapping and braiding to give each magnet its own style. Then I glued the magnet to the back of the cork, then glued to seashells to the front.

It's as easy as that, they look so good on my fridge on top of the drawing! Special thanks again to Lost Oak Winery in Burleson for giving me their corks to upcycle.
